A Heartfelt Homage to Levantine Heritage: Chef Salam Dakkak’s Sufret Maryam in Dubai

Stepping through the olive-green doors of Sufret Maryam in Wasl 51, you’re instantly welcomed by a vivid portrayal of Chef Salam Dakkak’s mother, Maryam—the inspiration behind this newly opened restaurant. Following the success of Bait Maryam in JLT, Sufret Maryam marks Chef Salam’s second venture, presenting an “elevated” take on Levantine cuisine with a strong emphasis on family, heritage, and home.

The interior is a heartfelt tribute to Chef Salam’s roots, blending Palestinian art and personal mementos, like a vintage sewing machine and an old typewriter. These items honor her parents and bring to life the stories of her family’s past, adding a cozy, lived-in feel to the dining space. Chef Salam describes Sufret Maryam as more than just a restaurant, but a place where guests are treated like family.

The menu at Sufret Maryam is an ode to Levantine flavors, yet approachable and comforting. We enjoyed dishes like the creamy hummus (Dhs36) and vine leaves (Dhs52) served with garlic yogurt and pomegranate, which offered a perfect blend of textures and flavors. A standout was the Khobez Al Bait (Dhs41), featuring zaatar, confit garlic, and tomato salsa on warm, pillowy bread—a true embodiment of comfort food. The Farm To Table salad (Dhs47) also shone with fresh ingredients that evoke a home-cooked meal shared around the family table.

Sufret Maryam captures the essence of the UAE’s dining scene—a celebration of culture, family, and the simple joy of gathering around a table. As Chef Salam brings her family’s legacy to Dubai, Sufret Maryam stands as a testament to authentic dining experiences that resonate with both heart and soul.
